Bricks and motor companies want ecommerce to follow rules

Association will lobby Govt. to enforce punishment for e-commerce companies which fail to follow new norms.

Mumbai: Even if the Government has defined a list of can do’s and can’t do’s for the e-commerce
marketplace; the battle between offline and online retail still seems to continue.

The country’s brick-and-mortar retailers will be lobbying to make sure that e-commerce companies follow the new rules. And, they should be punished if they fail to do so.  As per an article in The Economic Times, Kishore Byiani, Future Group CEO, said, in letter and spirit they expect there would be a major non-compliance issued against many e-commerce players.

The Retailers Association of India (RAI) has a representation of more than 1,000 brick-and-mortar retailers in the country. This includes major offline retailers such as Shoppers Stop, Reliance Retail, etc.  The RAI will be sending a letter to the government over the next two days. The letter will highlight the need to create a level playing field and urge that, the government takes appropriate action if the norms are disregarded.

Previously, the RAI had raised a concern regarding the marketplace models that the e-commerce companies are using. However, e-commerce companies continue to say that they are platforms that connect buyers and sellers.
