Yes, you read that right! Google has announced that Orkut is officially shutting down. The date announced is 30th September 2014.
As per Reuters, the site is widely used across Brazil and India. It hasn’t been able to increase its presence worldwide. “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell,” Google said in a post on the Orkut blog on Monday.
Orkut was launched in 2004 along side Facebook, which is currently the greatest social media giant with over 1.28 billion users across the world. Google however promises to maintain an archive of the communities that were present in orkut.
